La Unica - Fargo
About This Spot
Stepping into La Unica feels like finding a small, vibrant corner of Mexico tucked away in the heart of Fargo. The pace is relaxed and welcoming, a refreshing contrast to the bustle of everyday life. Here, the air hums softly with the mingling scents of freshly made tortillas, roasted chiles, and warm pan dulce, inviting you to linger and savor moments as much as the food.
It’s the kind of place where the rhythm comes from the hum of familiar conversations and the steady flow of friends and neighbors reconnecting over shared plates. The atmosphere is friendly, without fuss, framed by a genuine warmth that comes from being a family-run spot with roots deep in authentic Mexican culinary traditions.
As you settle in, the experience unfolds naturally — the comforting textures of fresh tortillas, the mild heat of carefully crafted salsas, and the hearty presence of rice and beans each tell a story beyond flavor. Here, meals are not just about satisfying hunger but evoking a sense of place and belonging, especially for those distant from home who find a little comfort in these familiar tastes.
For anyone curious about the richer sides of Mexican cooking, La Unica also offers an intriguing array of chiles and traditional ingredients that hint at the depth behind every dish. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast, a casual lunch, or exploring something new for dinner, the offerings here feel like invitations to pause, savor, and connect—to more than just the food on your plate.
In many ways, La Unica is more than a Mexican restaurant. It’s a quiet celebration of heritage and everyday generosity, a place that brings people together through shared moments that feel both personal and timeless.

An absolute gem. Carlos and his wife run a wonderful operation here. Spent 15 years in Central Texas and this place is legit! Huaraches, rice, beans, carne asada tacos and salsas - que rico!!

We moved here from San Antonio a little less than a year ago and we've been missing the food so much. Ran into another Texas ex-pat the other day and she said La Unica was THE PLACE. went for breakfast and was not disappointed. They even have big tubs of fresh pan dulce that was sooooo good . As close to being home as I've found yet.

Delicious enchiladas and the plate is huge! Very tasty rice and beans, too! Friendly and quick service.

Update. They now have a very large section of chiles (including morita) and other ingredients. The price and service is great. I came in hoping they had canela (Mexican cinnamon) for turkey mole, ended up leaving with raisins, pepitas, sesame seeds, and star anise. I just purchased a few pounds of various chiles online, otherwise I could have gotten those here as well. (original review 2025). Was looking for a specific ingredient (morita chiles). They don't stock them, but the woman working called over to the main shop to check - which I greatly appreciate. I grabbed a substitute which ended up working better.

Finally got a chance to go into La Unica on South University and order some food. Absolutely fabulous! Bought a few homemade things for the fridge, too - Spanish rice, tortillas and chips. Yummy. Go if and as often as you can.

Love to purchase thier home made tortillas. Sometimes it's a hit or miss on quality but I'll still buy them.
